Greg coffee shop is an institution in Haifa. It opened its doors in 1996 and until last month had only ever closed them for holidays. The Hizbullah rockets that began raining down on Haifa several weeks ago changed that routine. For the first two weeks of the hostilities, much of this coastal city was shut down, with even trendy Moriah Boulevard losing its liveliness. But then last week, following a few days of quiet in the third week of war, a number of small businesses, coffee shops and restaurants re-opened to the public.
Stationed in Haifa to cover the news, a fellow journalist and I were excited to catch a quick bite in an establishment other than the pizza shops and shwarma stands that have remained open throughout the conflict. We chose Greg for its stylish sign and the fact that a good number of other people were already there. The seating options include wicker chairs and couches with black cushions both indoors and outside on a raised patio. While most of the other patrons chose the air-conditioning inside, we joined a few others sitting outside to watch the city come alive.
The food itself was average, though the prices were surprisingly fair (Greg's location in the Carmel neighborhood suggests something more expensive). The wait staff was especially attentive and chatty, and the ambiance was a mixture of relief that life could start getting back to normal and tentative hope for better times.
