Forget Madonna and Leonard Cohen. The big show of the summer might just be Calexico, a potent roots rock collective formed around the long time collaboration between Arizonians Joey Burns and John Convertino, which is booked to perform on August 18 at the Barby Club in Tel Aviv.
Incorporating a strong South American vibe, with traces of Morricone's spaghetti western soundtracks, early rock & roll, sensitive singer/songwriter ballads and an odd cover or two by the likes of Arthur Lee and Love, Calexico has established itself as one of indie rock's most creative and expansive units over the last decade.
Fresh from touring the US with Andrew Bird and The Decembrists in support of their excellent new album Carried to Dust, the six-piece band will be crisscrossing Europe in July and August.
