MK Haneen Zoabi (Balad) has refused to attend a Knesset House Committee meeting on whether she should be put on trial for participating in the 2010 Gaza flotilla aboard the Mavi Marmara.

Nineteen months after the flotilla incident, Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein has yet to decide if Zoabi will be prosecuted for her participation, and House Committee chairman Yariv Levin (Likud) has yet to receive answers on the matter, despite contacting Weinstein multiple times.

Therefore, Levin scheduled a committee meeting on the matter for next week, inviting Zoabi and a representative of Weinstein’s office.

Zoabi responded by sending a letter to Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, in which she requested that the meeting be canceled.

The Balad MK wrote that House Committing meeting is an “intervention in the authority and consideration of the attorney- general” and that Levin’s goal in calling the meeting is to “strike fear” in law enforcement authorities.

In addition, Zoabi wrote that she hopes Weinstein’s decision will not be influenced by the meeting.

“It is clear to all that my participation in the flotilla is at the heart of an MK’s immunity, because it is a totally political activity,” she explained.

Levin said that he plans to continue the discussion until it is exhausted.

He explained that he seeks to “put an end to the ‘absurdity’ in which an MK that took advantage of her parliamentary status to aid terrorism and is avoiding punishment and even discussing her deeds.”
