Lovers of folk-rock music circa late 1960s to mid-1970s would have been thrilled to leap into the time warp of a new Jerusalem-based band that performs CSNY (Crosby Stills Nash and Young) covers. The trio appeared on November 9 at the Hakatzeh bar on Shushan St., a small side street parallel to Safra City Hall Plaza. The band performed a full complement of some 20 CSNY songs. Among them was the name of the group, "Long Time Gone." They also sang "Carry On," "Guinevere," "Southern Cross" and "Cinnamon Girl." Particularly enjoyable was "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes," named for folk icon Judy Collins. For much of the concert, I closed my eyes and imagined that I had been transported to the Woodstock Festival. An enthusiastic crowd of mostly English speakers filled the bar as the band charged forward, led by folk guitarist Eliyahu Sidikman, a Long Island native. The trio was rounded out by tenor David Alon from Philadelphia and Israeli-born Amihai Katz. The enjoyment was amplified by the total absence of smokers. This permitted those in attendance, not to mention the band itself, to avoid the fumes that so often pollute live music venues. Performances have been booked at the Beersheba coffee house/cultural center Ashan Hazman on Wednesday December 17 and, by popular demand, at Hakatzeh again on Sunday, December 28. If you missed them at Hakatzeh, this could be your opportunity to shed a few decades and smile from ear to ear. The band's Web site is under construction.
