Yes, that is true. Israel is a great strategic asset of USA in the Middle East, and Netanyahu is not supporting the Obama’s Middle East strategies. However, the real reasons for friendship between USA and Israel and for animosity between Obama and Netanyahu are of different, more profound nature.
On USA and Israel
What makes USA and Israel the true spiritual friends is that both nations are a sort of founding fathers of the contemporary Judeo-Christian Western Civilization – without them this Ten-Commandments-based civilization stops to exist as we know it.
USA had done it twice. The first time it was done in 1776 when the European human-led, autocratic type of government was replaced by a Torah/Bible-led type of government - the governing power was shifted from a human dictator to the humans themselves. Then it was done the second time in the mid-1860th when USA abolished the slavery as a Bible sin.
Israel had done it three times. Over three millenniums ago at Mount Sinai the Torah and Ten Commandments were accepted by the Jews as the governing guidance for the Jews themselves and for the entire non-Jewish world. Then, two millenniums ago the governing guidance of the Torah was transmitted to the non-Jewish world through the Christian Bible. And finally, in 1948 the Torah-guided State of Israel was established as the light for the nations (of course, a potential light).
On Obama and Netanyahu
Both Obama and Netanyahu are guided by the urge to solidify their historic domestic and international legacies. However, they are trying to solidify completely different legacies.

America as we know it—wealthy, powerful, assertive—is not what Obama wants. He wants a smaller America, a poorer America, an America unable to exert its will, an America happy to be one power among many, an America in decline so that other nations might rise—all in the name of global fairness. To Obama, the hated “1 percent” isn’t just wealthy Americas; it is America itself. In Obama’s view, America needs to be taken down a notch.
Thus to solidify his legacy Obama has to diminish the leading role of USA in the Western Judeo-Christian Civilization and therefore the leading role of this civilization in the entire world. Since Israel is a founding member of this civilization, to diminish the role of this civilization in our world requires diminishing the role of Israel in this world. The easiest way to do this is by discrediting Netanyahu as the leader of this country, and this is being done.

The Israeli nation was to be a “transition.” This means that to the extent that Israel cleanse themselves by keeping the Torah, so they pass their power on to the rest of the nations. And when the rest of the nations also sentence themselves to a scale of merit, then the Messiah will be revealed. That is because the role of the Messiah, is not only to qualify Israel to the ultimate goal of adhesion with Him, but to teach the ways of God to all the nations, as the verse says, “And all nations will flow onto Him”.
Thus to solidify his legacy Netanyahu has to strengthen the leading role of USA in the Western Judeo-Christian Civilization and the role of Israel as a leader in fighting the adversaries of this civilization which are currently Islamists who are a part of Islamic civilization.
That’s why Obama and Netanyahu are spiritual adversaries while USA and Israel are spiritual friends.
