Controversy kicks off Syrian peace talks

The delegation of Syrian opposition powers set to take part in peace talks in Geneva has caused controversy among opposition groups, with one opposition chief saying it is unlikely to reach a peace deal with the government due to its lack of authoritative negotiators.

The delegation, which is headed by former Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab, set off to Geneva for the United Nations-backed peace talks on Saturday, but it is still unclear if Hijab will directly participate in the negotiation.

Alaa Arafat, an executive member of the Syrian opposition organization National Front for Change and Liberation, said Saturday that the lack of high ranking delegates will reduce the possibility for the two sides to reach a peace deal.
