IEC warns of rolling blackouts in upcoming heatwave

The Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) warned Wednesday that Israelis may soon experience rolling blackouts as a mid-summer heatwave increases demand for electricity this week. It called on residents to refrain from using heavy electrical appliances during peak hours in the middle of the day.

If demand for electricity surpasses the supply Israel's power systems is capable of providing, in order to prevent widespread blackouts, the IEC said, it will have to intermittently halt power supplies to localized areas throughout the country.
