Israel to play Great Britain for World Cup

Israel’s national quad wheelchair tennis team will face Great Britain in the final of the World Team Cup in Alghero, Sardinia on Sunday, aiming to continue its perfect tournament and claim the title for the first time since 2012.

Israel, which is hoping to win the title for a fourth time, advanced to the final on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Japan, with Noam Gershony leading the way yet again.

After winning Pool A with a 3-0 record, Gershony gave Israel the lead against Japan with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Shota Kawano.

Mitsuteru Moroishi leveled the tie with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Shraga Weinberg. But Gershony and Weinberg would not be denied in the doubles, beating Kawano and Moroishi 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the tie.

Gershony, the 2012 Paralympics singles gold medalist who retired after his triumph in London but continues to train and represent Israel in the annual World Team Cup, took his record in the singles and doubles in Sardinia to 8-0, with all the wins coming in straight sets.

Great Britain is also still unbeaten in the tournament, advancing to the final with a 2-1 win over the USA.
