Jerusalem synagogue vandalized by fire, swastikas

The Pitchei Olam synagogue, located off downtown Jerusalem’s heavily traveled King George Road, was defaced early Thursday morning by vandals who set the curtains covering its ark on fire, and scrawled swastikas onto nearby doors.

According to police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, authorities were notified at roughly 6 a.m. after congregants entered the house of worship, situated below a stairwell, across the street from the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem and adjacent to the Leonardo Hotel.

“The curtains were badly burned, but the fire did not harm any of the Torah’s,” said Rosenfeld, adding that an investigation has been opened after forensic evidence was taken from the scene.

The synagogue was empty during the attack, and no serious damage was sustained, Rosenfeld said.
