Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid said Tuesday night to a gathering of US Jewish leaders that he would ensure that all Jewish denominations in Israel are placed on an equal legal footing and would also institute civil marriage.

“I will do everything in my power to ensure the equality of all streams of Judaism in Israel, in terms of conversion, marriage, funding and in the eyes of the law,” Lapid said. “I will also ensure that there will be civil marriage here too,” the Yesh Atid leader declared.

The haredi Shas and United Torah Judaism parties are completely opposed to these policies, and Shas ran a controversial advertisement during the election campaign in which it scorned the state conversion program and what it described as “Jewish conversions by fax.”
