Meretz decided on Wednesday that the 1000 members of their governing council will vote for a new leader for the party on February 7.

The new leader will replace Haim Oron, who announced his resignation on Wednesday after three years on the job  in which he led the party to its disappointing finish in the 2009 elections when Meretz won only three seats.

Oron quit the Knesset in March after 23 years. The deadline to join the race is December 28. The candidates are expected to include MKs Zehava Gal-On and Ilan Gilon.
