PARIS — Two French citizens were kidnapped while eating dinner in the Niger capital by four armed men, and soldiers immediately gave chase but the group got away, French President Nicolas Sarkozy confirmed on Saturday.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest kidnappings, but an al-Qaida offshoot in the region continues to hold another five French nationals, who were kidnapped in September in Niger and thought to be held in northern Mali.
