A senior aide to Shas chairman Aryeh Deri was arrested on Monday night and detained until Friday on suspicion of extorting a former member of the Jerusalem Municipal Council for Shas.

The aide, Moshe Haim Halaf, allegedly demanded that the council member quit his position in light of a compromising video of the council member, and threatened that the video would be published by haredi media outlets if he did not stand down. The council member quit his position in September last year. Another three suspects in the case were arrested on Monday night including a journalist from one of the haredi news websites.
