Stop-and-Frisk Law passes final vote

Legislation extending the police’s authority to conduct searches on a suspect’s person passed a final vote in the Knesset overnight Monday, with 39 in favor and 31 opposed.
According to the new law, proposed by the Public Security Ministry, police may search anyone suspected of planning terrorism in a designated location thought to be a target for hostile destructive actions. Suspects of criminal activity may be searched for drugs or weapons if the person is engaging in threatening or intimidating behavior at any time or place.
MKs from several opposition parties spoke out against the bill in a debate that took several hours, saying it authorizes police to unfairly profile and target minority groups.
