Tel Aviv referee charged with attempted murder

Israeli volleyball referee Barak Nagar was charged on Sunday with attempted murder of a fellow referee in Tel Aviv two weeks ago.

According to the indictment filed at the Tel Aviv District Court, Nagar, 31, came up with a meticulous plan to murder his counterpart, who is also the son of a high ranking police officer, after he was chosen to referee at the 2016 European University Games in Croatia next month at Nagar’s expense.

The indictment describes how Nagar had decided to hang his fellow official and then chop up his body and dump it in a garbage can.

Nagar purchased sleeping pills and a saw, among other things, and prior to the attempted murder he killed his friend’s cat while staying at his apartment and a dog he adopted as preparation.

After inviting him to his apartment, Nagar drugged his fellow referee by slipping sleeping pills into his alcoholic drinks. After stripping him and tying him up, the fellow referee awakened briefly, but after falling asleep once more Nagar began to stab him and strangle him.

That woke him up again and this time he managed to hit Nagar in the face and escape from the apartment bleeding and naked.

“Everything happens for a reason,” said Nagar at his arraignment on Sunday. “I’m innocent. The judge will decide what I am innocent of.”
