Turkey, Syrian rebels attack US-backed militia

BEIRUT - The Turkish army and allied Syrian rebel groups on Wednesday attacked villages held by US-allied militias near the city of Manbij in northern Syria, a spokesman for the militias said.

There was no immediate comment from Turkey, which is waging a campaign with allied Syrian rebel groups to carve out a buffer zone in northern Syria. The attack focused on a string of villages controlled by the Manbij Military Council, part of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance, the spokesman for the Manbij Military Council told Reuters.

Sharfan Darwish told Reuters the villages were located 27 km (17 miles) west of Manbij. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said this week Manbij was the next target of the Turkish campaign in northern Syria.

The SDF includes the Kurdish YPG militia, which Turkey views as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a group that has waged a three-decade insurgency in Turkey.
