The total subscriber base in the Israeli cellular industry grew 9.5 percent in 2005, ending the year with 7.8 million subscribers, Merrill Lynch said this week in a report on the global wireless market. Israel's cellular penetration stood at 113.7% at year-end, compared to 103.8% in 2004 as some 132,000 net subscribers joined the market during the year, the firm said. Cellcom took 33.2% of the market share, followed by Partner with 32.2%, Pelephone at 29.9% and Mirs with 4.7%.
Microsoft on Tuesday released its updated version of Internet Explorer 7 for Microsoft Windows XP called beta 2, available to run on Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and on Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. Some of the features on the new version include a reorganized frame on new windows opened and improved tabbing options, which allow users to view multiple sites in a single browser window and more easily switch from one site to another. Other features added are a toolbar search box, an advanced printing facility, upgraded favorites center, zoom feature and a personalized feeds center for news, blogs and information.
Ra'anana-based billing solutions provider Amdocs boosted its penetration into the Russian market by signing an agreement with Russian telecommunications company Vimpel Communications to standardize VimpelCom's affiliate companies' billing services on its technology.
Also making inroads in Russia, Lod-based AudioCodes, a provider of voice- over-packet (VoP) technologies and voice network products, will supply its technology to the Russian telecommunications market through Russian networking and telecom distributor CompTek.
Petah Tikva-based Eltek Ltd., a manufacturer of advanced circuitry solutions, has received its first order from a major US aerospace contractor for its flex-rigid printed circuit boards (PCBs) that will be used in the production of military equipment. The deal held strategic importance to the company by giving it access to the US aerospace industry where it expects to gain follow-on orders. The PCBs are due to be delivered during the second quarter.
Herzliya Pituah-based software lens developer Dblur Technologies Ltd. has raised $6m. in a second round of financing led by Sequoia Capital. First round investors TempoPark Fund also participated in the new round.
Petah Tikva-based Aspectus Video Intelligence, Inc., a provider of digital video intelligence (VI) and video content analysis (VCA) technology, closed a $2m. financing round led by New York-based 21Ventures LLC. The funding will be used to finance additional technology development and increased marketing and sales activities in the US and EMEA region. The round brings its total funds raised to over $3.5m., having also received a $300,000 grant from the chief scientist's office at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor.
Nova Measuring Instruments, Ltd., a Rehovot-based supplier of integrated metrology and process control for the semiconductor industry, has agreed to purchase US-based HyperNex, Inc. in a share swap valued at about $4.5m. HyperNex manufactures a wide-angle X-Ray Diffraction stand-alone metrology system for advanced semiconductor fabs. Following the expected closing of the deal in May, HyperNex is forecast to account for about 10% of Nova's revenue in 2006.
Tel Aviv-based Crescendo Networks, a developer of high performance application front end products, has been selected as a finalist in computer magazine Network Computing's 20th annual 'Best of Interop' competition. Crescendo's ALP technology, which cuts the waiting time for web application requests to move between processing levels, was selected as a finalist in the "Application Networks and Performance" category.
