Hi Adrian, Welcome to the D”ash family! We’re glad you enjoyed the article. It was certainly an undertaking writing it! We agree that sensitive topics such as these do need to be looked at again with fresh, modern eyes. If you liked that piece, we suggest looking back at our April issue from this year to get another perspective on some modern Israeli viewpoints about the subject. That piece looks at what the legacy of the Holocaust means to young people who have grandparents that survived the Holocaust. In terms of your question about “what Israelis think about it and Holocaust-related items in general?”, that’s a tough question to ask. As they say, two Jews, five opinions. But I will say from my experience that the Holocaust is less of a taboo topic for young people in Israel than it is in the Diaspora. In fact, Holocaust jokes are somewhat common here amongst young people: this is part of what motivated us to do that “Hipster Hitler” piece. For older Israelis, it’s still pretty taboo to make these kinds of jokes; that’s understandably so. However, there has been more openness from Israeli survivors to talk about their experiences in the past few years. This is probably because many realize soon there will be no survivors left. I personally saw a very moving art exhibit by a survivor recently. Who knows… maybe that’ll be another article!
Cheers,D’’ash team Predictions for 2012 Dear D’’ash,In the December D’’ash, you had a “Top Ten” moments of 2011. But I saw there were no prediction pieces. Considering you all are journalists in Israel, I imagine you have some ideas about what’s going to happen in 2012? I would love to know what you think!Best,
Nora, Brussels Dear Nora, What a good question! Well, that’s always a very tough question to answer, especially since the future usually proves most of us wrong. That is especially the case for those of us in the news. Rather than saying what we think will happen in 2012, we’ll say what questions are on our minds as we enter 2012:
What will happen with the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority?
Will the social protests create change in legislation?
Will Israel’s relationship with its neighbors, particularly with Egypt, change?
What will be Israel’s next big innovations? Thoughts? Best, D’’ash team
