The man was wounded and evacuated by a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance.

The IDF said that seven other people were arrested during the operation.

Palestinian medical sources said that Ibrahim Sarhan, 22, was shot at least twice, once in each thigh, and was dead by the time he reached hospital. Sarhan had been on his way to dawn prayers when he was shot, his uncle, Ismail Sarhan, told Reuters.

The death of the Palestinian man came as tensions are running high for Israel and the Palestinian Authority, which has announced its intention to unilaterally declare statehood in September at the United Nations General Assembly, amid concerns that the move will bring a new wave of violence to the West Bank.

Meanwhile, a Kassam rocket fired from the Gaza Strip exploded in a field near a kibbutz in the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council Wednesday morning, and another in the Eshkol region Wednesday afternoon. according to Army Radio. No injuries or damage was reported.

Earlier, the IAF struck two targets in the northern Gaza Strip overnight Tuesday, which the IDF described as sites used for weapons production. Direct hits on the targets were recorded, the IDF spokesperson said.

The airstrikes were in response to two rockets that were fired from the Strip into Israeli territory Tuesday night.

The Kassam rockets exploded in the western Negev. No injuries or damage was reported, although one landed near a local kibbutz.
