Public Security Ministry Director-General Ya’acov Genot called for “significant changes” to the troubled fire services on Wednesday, during a hearing of the Knesset Finance Committee in which MKs voted to transfer an additional NIS 357 million to the services’ budget.
Genot, who recently began his tenure leading the often fractious ministry, said he was working to ensure that those changes, including the transfer of the fire services to his ministry’s auspices, took place.

Committee chairman Moshe Gafni (United Torah Judaism) backed up Genot’s comments, announcing that “the time has come to establish a national fire service that is both professional and high-quality.”
But MK Shelly Yacimovich (Labor) said that the Treasury, while allocating money to the fire services, was also continuing “an irresponsible policy of making the transfer of key funds dependent on harming the fire fighters and their rights.”
Yacimovich accused the Treasury of responsibility for the firing of 81 firefighters by failing to transfer the budget for their salaries.
