The petition was filed hours after the Knesset approved an amendment to the law which expressly allows the Council for Higher Education to approve separate programs for men and women.
The legislation, Amendment No. 12, 2026, was sponsored by MK Limor Son Har Melech and passed by a vote of 52-43.
“I simply cannot ask you to vote for a party that I myself can no longer bring myself to vote for,” Illouz stated. “This is no longer the Likud. This is a party that has been hijacked.”
The bill passed in its final second and third readings by a 65-51 vote and is considered to be one of the key pieces of legislation that the coalition has been pushing to pass.
The announcement came one day after Haskel resigned from her position as deputy foreign minister over the passing of controversial legislation that froze the arrests of haredi draft evaders.
Buskila’s potential appointment comes one day after previous deputy foreign minister Sharren Haskel announced that she was resigning from the government.
