15 rebels killed in clashes in Sri Lanka, says military

A series of gunbattles between government troops and Tamil separatists across Sri Lanka's embattled north killed 15 guerrillas, the military said Wednesday. Soldiers clashed with Tamil guerrillas in several villages along the front lines in the Vavuniya district on Tuesday, just south of rebel-held territory, a defense ministry official said. Fighting killed 15 insurgents, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to the media. Soldiers suffered no casualties. There was no immediate comment from the rebels.
