50 miners killed in 2 China mine blasts

Two mine accidents in different parts of China have killed at least 56 people and left 21 missing, state media said Monday. The official China Daily newspaper said 37 miners were killed in a gas explosion before dawn Sunday at a private mine near Dengfeng city in Henan province in central China. Rescuers were searching for nine others. A notice on the Web site of the State Administration of Work Safety said Sunday that 108 people were underground at the time of the explosion, and 64 escaped. An additional seven were later rescued alive. A woman who answered the phone at the Dengfeng Work Safety Bureau confirmed the accident but had no other details. She refused to give her name, as is common among Chinese officials.
