Al-Qaida-linked militants free Philippine aid worker

Al-Qaida-linked militants freed before dawn Thursday one of two aid workers they kidnapped last month, a provincial official said. Basilan provincial Vice Gov. Alrashid Sakalahul said Esperancita Hupida was released close to Tipo-Tipo township by Abu Sayyaf militants, but her colleague remained in the hands of the gunmen. The women were traveling with 10 other Filipino aid workers September 15 in two vehicles when they were stopped by 10 Abu Sayyaf gunmen in nearby Ungkaya Pukan township on Basilan island. Seven of the workers managed to escape in one vehicle, leaving behind Hupida, Millet Mendoza Mendoza and three others. The gunmen released the three hostages hours later.
