Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has nominated David Sharan, Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz's chief of staff, as Israel's next consul-general in New York.Sharan's nomination must now be approved by the full cabinet, something that was not the case with Reuben, who was named as temporary ambassador to the UN in order to bypass the need for Lieberman to get the approval of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for the job.RELATED:Irregularities found at Foreign Ministry missions in NYNew consul named for Sao Paulo, BrazilSharan grew up in the US, graduated from high school in Los Angeles, and is considered a close Steinitz confidant. As a result of his position in Steinitz's office, Sharan is believed to have good relations with a number of US senators, congressmen and White House officials. He has been an advisor to Steinitz since 1999.While the appointment of consuls-general is generally the purview of the foreign minister, Netanyahu reportedly stepped in and nixed Lieberman's first choice for the job, former Netanyahu spokesman and consul-general in Miami Shai Bazak. Sharan will replace Assaf Shariv, who was appointed to the job in 2007 by Ehud Olmert. Shariv served as a spokesman both to Olemrt and, before him, to then-prime minister Ariel Sharon.
