Gates travels to Afghanistan for war update

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates made a surprise visit to Afghanistan on Tuesday, where he's to receive an update on the war there. Gates was to see American military commanders and Afghan government officials, including the US-backed president, Hamid Karzai. Gates will also talk with US military leaders about their desire for more US troops and better surveillance technology to hunt insurgents and track roadside bomb networks. Gates was in Baghdad earlier, where the US general credited with lowering violence has gotten a promotion. General David Petraeus will now be in charge of both wars.
