Helicopter plucks Italian mountaineer from K2

A helicopter has plucked an Italian survivor from K2, where 11 mountaineers died after an avalanche on the world's second-highest peak, A Pakistani army spokesman said Wednesday. Spokesman Maj. Farooq Feroz said Marco Confortola and three members of his support team were taken from a base camp and were on their way to a nearby town. The rescue came five days after an ice fall stranded him near the K2's summit. Confortola is the last survivor to reach safety. Eleven mountaineers died from the avalanche and exposure. They included three South Koreans, two Nepalis, two Pakistanis and mountaineers from France, Ireland, Serbia and Norway.
