Hurricane Norbert slams into Mexico's Baja coast

Hurricane Norbert has swept across Mexico's southern Baja California peninsula with torrential rains and screaming winds, forcing scores of people to flee flooded homes. The Category 2 storm with winds of up to 100 mph (160 kph) hit land near Puerto Charley on Baja's southwest coast and hours later is emerging over the Gulf of California. The US National Hurricane Center said Norbert was expected to reach the Mexican mainland Saturday night with hurricane-force winds. Baja residents fled to shelters in school buses and army trucks as floodwaters rose in homes. Winds were uprooting palm trees and water was knee-high in some streets of the town of Puerto San Carlos.
