Thai PM declares emergency in capital

Thailand's prime minister has declared a state of emergency in the capital after street fighting overnight between opponents and supporters of the government left one man dead and dozens of people injured. The announcement was broadcast on all Thai television stations at 7 a.m. Tuesday. It said Army Commander Gen. Anupong Paochinda was in charge of peacekeeping under the state of emergency for Bangkok. The emergency was decreed by Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej. The emergency suspends some civil liberties and allows the use of the military force to police the city.
