UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari said Friday he is "cautiously encouraged" that Myanmar's military ruler is prepared to hold talks with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi under certain conditions and called for "maximum flexibility" to arrange a meeting as soon as possible.
Addressing the UN Security Council on his four-day trip to Myanmar following the government's crackdown on peaceful demonstrators and Buddhist monks, Gambari said "this is an hour of historic opportunity for Myanmar."
