US says it looks forward to working with probable Japanese PM Aso

The United States said on Monday it looked forward to working with Japan's probable next prime minister Taro Aso. Aso on Monday won a landslide victory in an election within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party to replace Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda. Aso is likely to become prime minister on Wednesday when the lower house of parliament votes on a successor. The body is controlled by Aso's party. State Department spokesman Robert Wood said the United States noted Aso's election as party head. He added: "Japan and the United States enjoy a close working relationship and we look forward to working with the next prime minister."
