The outgoing government approved on Sunday an additional NIS 15 million towards Israel’s preparations for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
A few days before she officially retires from politics, Minister of Culture and Sport Limor Livnat lobbied to increase the overall budget for the preparations for Rio 2016 to a total of NIS 30.5 million over 2015 and 2016.
“This is one of my final decisions as Sports Minister,” said Livnat. “This increase is supposed to help more Israeli athletes to reach the Olympics and significantly increase Israel’s chances of winning medals at Rio 2016.”
The monthly stipend received by Israel’s Olympic hopefuls will be increased by a total of NIS 1.5 million thanks to the additional funding, while NIS 2.1 million will go towards training more coaches and NIS 3.9 million will be used to send athletes to more competitions abroad.
