Activists from the Campaign to Free Gilad Schalit met with Palestinian activists at the Gaza border on Saturday afternoon, ahead of a combined rally planned for later in the week. From opposite sides of the border fence, the activists met to prepare a demonstration which will be held on Wednesday this week, to call for the release of the IDF soldier, as well as Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. In related news, London-based Arab newspaper Asharq Alawsat reported that Israel and Egypt will soon announce understandings that the two countries have reached on negotiations Schalit's release, as well as peace talks with the Palestinians,. The Saturday report, which quoted unnamed Israel and Egyptian sources in Cairo, stated that these understandings would lead to new decisions on the issues, which will be revealed following the meeting between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday. The paper also reported that the prime minister's point man on Schalit, Hagai Hadas, visited Cairo earlier this week and met with Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, mere hours after the latter met with Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal. The Jerusalem Post could not independently confirm the report.
