Israel's ambassador to the US, Danny Ayalon, accepted a request Wednesday by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni to extend his term of office until a replacement was found.
Ayalon was due to complete his tenure in August.
"I would have been happy to return to Israel in August, however, when the prime minister and foreign minister make a request, especially in light of the sensitive period of time and the importance of Washington, who can refuse?" said Ayalon, adding that it was a "great honor" to represent Israel.
