The IDF completed an extensive four-day drill on Thursday which simulated combat scenarios on Israel's northern border and involved all four branches of the military. The Air Force, Navy, Army, and Intelligence Corps all took part in the exercise, the IDF Spokesperson Unit said, adding that the simulation was the first to also "test the reserve corps and the High Command of the General Staff." This drill, part of the IDF's annual training plan, was aimed at ensuring the military's battle readiness, the Spokesperson Unit added. "Lessons and conclusions from past exercises as well as from the Second Lebanon war were implemented in the exercise," the Spokesperson Unit's statement said. Throughout the four-day exercise, President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and Defense Minister Ehud Barak all visited training sites and heard briefings by IDF Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi. They were also briefed by the head of the Northern Command, Maj. Gen. Gadi Aizenkot. Ashkenazi visited the Northern Command Headquarters and a number training areas during the exercise. He also flew in an Apache helicopter and joined a submarine crew for a training mission.
