Jerusalem mayor to eateries: Keep tradition, don't sell hametz

Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski asked local eateries Tuesday not to sell hametz on Passover out of consideration for the public. In a letter sent to both kosher and non-kosher stores and restaurants, Lupolianski appealed to owners to respect the long-standing tradition of the city not to sell leavened products. The request came after Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz made a final decision earlier Tuesday to allow the selling of hametz, ruling that the restriction on leavened products applies only to its public display. Mazuz concluded that while it is forbidden to show leavened products in the market, in shop windows and displays, stores and restaurants may continue to carry it inside their private establishments.
