Livni promises Mofaz to be vice prime minister

Kadima leader Tzipi Livni on Wednesday told her vanquished leadership rival, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz, that he would serve as her vice prime minister and hold a senior portfolio in any government that she would form. Mofaz accepted the offer, which ended weeks of fighting between the two, and vowed to help Livni win the February 10 general election and form a government, regardless of what position he would hold in her government. Mofaz turned down Livni's offer to serve as Kadima's election campaign chairman, a post that is now likely to go to Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit or Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik.
