'Israel cannot take residency from Hamas MPs'

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel and Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, submitted a brief to the High Court of Justice on Wednesday, charging that the Minister of Interior had violated the rights of four Hamas legislators from east Jerusalem when he stripped them of their residency status. The two human rights organizations, which were granted the status of "friends of the court," argued that the law "does not grant the minister the authority to cancel permanent resident for 'breach of trust' or due to membership in a foreign parliament." They maintained that Palestinians living in east Jerusalem had a special status which was different from the status of immigrants.
