Hide and seek through the Haggada
For many, the most indelible memories of childhood Pessah Seders are the illustrations in the children's Haggadot we used. Given the circumstances, kids have little choice but to peruse the pictures while waiting - patiently or not - for the narrative to wind down and the food to be served.
Sifriyat Bet-El has made a virtue of necessity, issuing Gadi & the Haggadah, a richly illustrated children's hardcover Hebrew Haggada which promises to keep the kids busy not only by looking at Rinat Gilboa's colorful, busy pictures but, in a Where's Waldo-type concept, by searching through them for the boy Gadi, his little sister, mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, Elijah the Prophet - and the afikoman.
Not that each picture carries all the images; on the bottom of each page, alongside a little magnifying icon, is written what images are hidden in the illustration above. Some pages carry characters beyond the family, the prophet and the afikoman. For example, the page illustrating the phrase "In every generation one must see himself as if he himself had left Egypt," the key at the bottom tells the reader that immigrants from seven countries can be found in the picture. Four pages at the end of the book reveal the location of the images for each illustration.
The illustrations themselves combine a pleasing jumble of characters in modern dress and in ancient costume. The traditional text appears as well, in an inviting, comprehensible format, and the semi-gloss pages are a pleasure to handle.
Kudos to Bet-El for coming up with this beautiful - and practical - concept.
