From Madrid to Buenos Aires
The Alhambra Theater in Jaffa will host a culturally and geographically expansive program of musical works on May 9, titled “From Madrid to Buenos Aires.”
The musical mystery tour will take in romantically flavored songs composed or made famous by veteran Spanish crooner Julio Iglesias, the vocal and instrumental Los Paraguayos ensemble, and the celebrated Los Panchos trio.
Heading the five-member band that will perform the May 9 show, which begins at 8 p.m., is Buenos Aires-born vocalist Rafael Gal Gonzales, who hails from a tango-dancing home and first heard the sounds of Latin music as a small child. Gonzales made aliya as a youth and soon began performing the songs he heard at home all over Israel, adding stories from Latin folklore to his routine.
His current band also includes Belarus-born jazz saxophonist Dima Shurin, as well as keyboardist Sam Fogel, percussionist Shimon Greenstein and vocalist Noa Tzur.

Stadler brings Bach to Latrun and Haifa
World famous Russian violinist Sergei Stadler will join forces with the Jerusalem Festival orchestra for concerts at the Latrun Monastery on Tuesday and at Haifa’s St. John’s Church on May 10.
The Independence Day concert in Latrun, which starts at 4:30 p.m., will be exclusively devoted to works by Bach, including the Violin Concerto in D minor, Violin Concerto in A minor, and the Concerto for Oboe and Violin. Dudu Carmel will be the oboist in the third work.
Meanwhile, the Haifa concert will begin at noon and include a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major.
The 51-year-old Stadler studied the violin with David Oistrakh and Leonid Kogan, and took the first prize and gold medal in the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He has performed as soloist with the London Philharmonic, the Russian National Symphony, and the Dresden Staatskapelle orchestras, collaborating with world-famous conductors such as Kurt Masur, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Mariss Jansons, Evgeny Svetlanov and Yuri Temirkanov.
At present, Stadler is artistic director of the Hermitage Musical Academy in St. Petersburg, as well as artistic director of the State Theater of Opera and Ballet of the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music.

Tadmor’s jubilee dance
Dancer and choreographer Ido Tadmor recently turned 50, and he will mark the landmark birthday with a festive show at Tel Aviv’s Suzanne Dellal Center on May 9 as part of this year’s Tel Aviv Dance Festival.
Tadmor has been one of the busiest professionals on the scene for some years, including a stint with the Batsheva Dance Company. He has also created a dance center in his name on behalf of the Tel Aviv Municipality, and acted as a judge on the popular Born to Dance television show. The 50-yearold choreographer is currently artistic director of the Israel Ballet, and was recently invited to perform with the famed Bolshoi Ballet company in Russia.
The birthday show, which begins at 10 p.m., will feature an international roster of leading dancers, including Bolshoi Ballet dancer Marianna Ryzhkina, with whom Tadmor will perform a duet, and members of the Israel Ballet. The program includes various works Tadmor has choreographed throughout his long career to date.

Graduate and student stage stuff
The Atid Hateatron (Future of Theater) Festival will showcase some of the best that the country’s theater graduates and students have to offer from May 11 to 15 at Tzavta in Tel Aviv.
The festival, which is now in its ninth year, features works created and performed by alumni from nine theater schools across the country, as well as a number of works by budding thespians who have yet to complete their studies. The five-day event also includes workshops by top directors and artists, such as Ram Nahari, Daniel Efrat, Inbal Lorrie and Haifa Theater director Moshe Naor.
