Three calves were stolen from a cattle ranch in the southern Golan Heights last week, despite added patrols set up after warnings were received of increased cattle theft in the area. The calves were estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of shekels. Ranch owner David Gross told the Local website that in addition to the cattle, two large tractors and some 60 head of sheep have been stolen in the area in the past month.
According to Cattle organization director-general Haim Dayan, cattle theft rises dramatically during the month of Ramadan. He added that “groups of cattle thieves conduct large and sophisticated theft operations of cows and sheep," Local reported. Katzrin police were investigating the most recent theft.
Kafr Kana girl dies after dental treatment
A six-year-old girl died on Friday after she lost consciousness while receiving dental treatment in Kafr Kana in the Wadi Ara region. Magen David Adom paramedics took the girl to the Emek Medical Center in Afula, where she was pronounced dead. MDA said in a statement that it believed the girl died as a result of an allergic reaction to the anesthetic she received.
Violence shuts down Haifa youth concert
An annual summer event held for youth in Haifa ended on a sour note last week as a concert by singer Omer Adam was halted prematurely and resulted in the arrest of a dozen teenagers. Toward the end of the Youth City concert, which drew a crowd of some 13,000, youths began throwing objects at the singer on stage, forcing him to stop his performance as police moved in to disperse the crowd and restore order.
The Haifa Municipality said it was necessary to shut down the event “due to the situation and the Haifa Municipality’s zero tolerance policy toward violence.” Police arrested 12 15- to 17-year-olds from Netanya, Migdal Ha’emek, Nazareth and Yokne’am.
Blaze causes Afula retirement home evacuation
A fire that broke out over the weekend in Afula resulted in the evacuation of some 250 senior citizens from a local retirement home. As firefighters battled the flames, local authorities brought a number of buses, and ambulances were sent to help evacuate the residents. No injuries were reported, but the senior citizens were not allowed to return to the residence until firefighters, aided by firefighting planes, extinguished the blaze and the smoke cleared from the area.
Illegal gas balloons seized in joint operation
A large operation targeting illegal sellers of gas canisters netted some 140 illegal gas balloons in Pardess Hanna last week. The operation was carried out by officials from the National Infrastructure Ministry’s Safety and Inspection Division in cooperation with police, following complaints from the public.
The gas balloons, marked with labels from various gas companies, were seized on a delivery truck departing from what inspectors believed to be a route to deliver the canisters. The canisters lacked proper paperwork and delivery documentation. A police investigation was ongoing, the Local website reported.

Cops discover drug operation on their doorstep
Police in Tel Aviv busted a drug operation running literally on their doorstep. Officers apparently accidentally discovered that the kiosk next to the Dizengoff Police Station was selling cocaine. They initiated an undercover operation that ultimately led to the arrest of the 34-year-old owner of the kiosk after they purchased some NIS 2,800 worth of the drug from him, Mynet reported.
Man dies in Jaffa shooting
A man in his twenties was shot to death by unknown assailants while riding a motorcycle in Jaffa last week. Shortly after 10:30 p.m., police received a report that gunshots were heard at the corner of Shivtei Yisrael and Michelangelo streets. Officers who arrived on the scene were told that the victim had been taken to the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon in serious condition The man died of his wounds. Police said the shooting appeared to be criminal. An investigation was opened into the incident.
Hod Hasharon man convicted of rape
The Petah Tikva District Court on Thursday convicted Hod Hasharon resident Lior Kabara, 24, of raping an 18-year-old girl three weeks ago at his friend’s house. His friend who was present during the time of the rape, Moshe Mesilato, 25, was convicted of indecent behavior.
According to the indictment, the two men got the girl drunk after her friends left the home and took advantage of her intoxicated state in order to rape her. Kabara allegedly covered the girl’s mouth so she could not scream, and told her that the sexual act was consensual so that she wouldn’t report the incident to the police.
Body found in Herzliya Marina
The body of a man in his 80s was discovered floating in the Herzliya Marina Sunday morning by passers-by. A police boat was sent to the scene to retrieve the body from the water. Magen David Adom paramedics were called by police and pronounced the man dead at the scene. Police suspected that the unidentified man had drowned.
Rishon Lezion schools undergo renovations
Schools in Rishon Lezion have been undergoing NIS 25 million worth of renovation and restoration work during the summer vacation. NIS 6 million was spent on upgrading and repairing air conditioning systems, installing acoustic ceilings, replacing windows, renovating bathrooms, installing benches and repaving courtyards in the local educational institutions. The work is expected to be completed by the beginning of the school year.
Rishon Lezion Mayor Dov Tzur said, “The goal is firstly to make Rishon Lezion the leading city in education,” the Local website reported. “I will continue to work and to invest in the pursuit of the goal and will not stop until we accomplish the desired result.”
Security guard killed in bank robbery
A 31-year-old security guard was shot to death in Be’er Ya’acov while attempting to prevent a bank robbery. Early last week, two men arrived at the Bank Hapoalim branch on a motorcycle. The security guard reportedly asked the men to remove their face-covering helmets, at which point a confrontation broke out and the guard was shot several times. The men entered the bank and took an unknown amount of money before fleeing the scene.
Magen David Adom paramedics who arrived on the scene found the guard lying on the ground outside the bank and tried to resuscitate him. They declared the man dead on the scene.
Large police forces arrived and opened an investigation into the robbery and murder. Police launched a manhunt for the suspects, the Local website reported.

Thieves arrested after cops follow their trail
Two youths from Ashkelon were arrested for car theft and driving under the influence last week after police followed their trail of blood to the hospital. The intoxicated youths allegedly stole a Daihatsu from a parking lot on Herzl Street in Ashkelon and intended to take the vehicle to an industrial area of the city. However, the youths crashed the car into a tree, causing major damage and injuries to themselves, Mynet reported.
Police investigators who arrived on the scene noticed blood stains in and around the vehicle. Officers followed the trail of blood to the Barzilai Medical Center, where they asked hospital staff if anyone had arrived with injuries indicative of a car accident. The suspects apparently admitted to stealing the car and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Eilat moves to encourage renewable energy
The Eilat Municipality, as part of its promotion of renewable energy, installed solar panels on the roofs of 12 local schools in recent days. In addition, the municipality announced an expedited process of building permit approval for the installation of solar panels on roofs of commercial, public and residential buildings. According to the director of the city’s Environmental Authority, Assaf Admon, the main purpose of the project is “to prove that you can save between 10 and 25 percent of energy costs.” He added, “Success of the project in Eilat and the Arava will allow the future expansion and implementation” in additional homes and buildings.
Parks Authority gives southerners free admission
As the South came under days of intense rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, the National Parks Authority announced over the weekend that it was opening national parks and nature reserves without entrance fees to residents of the South. Parks and reserves in the Negev, Center and eastern regions of the country were open to southern citizens.
Ashkelon man wounded by gunfire
An Ashkelon man was shot and lightly wounded on Saturday night. The gunman fled the scene and has not yet been identified. Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
