A US Army soldier was killed during combat operations in eastern Iraq, the military said Friday. The Task Force Lightning soldier attached to 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, died on Thursday during a small arms fire attack in Diyala province north of Baghdad. The soldier's identity was withheld pending notification of relatives. The death raised the number of American war dead to 2,863. So far this month in Iraq, 45 American service members have been killed or died.
