The State Department indicated Friday that it had no objection to plan by Jordan to develop a nuclear program for peaceful purposes. Deputy spokesman Tom Casey, without mentioning Jordan by name, said every country that adheres strictly to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty "has the right to develop civilian nuclear power for the benefit of their people." Casey commented in response to a disclosure King Abdullah II that his government has been discussing with western countries a plan to develop a civilian nuclear capability.
