Softball: Re/Max-Ra'anana shatters ISA scoring record

Team sets Israel Softball Association record with 22 runs in the eighth inning of the first game of a doubleheader.

Re/Max-Ra'anana exploded for an Israel Softball Association record 22 runs in the extra eighth inning of the first game of a doubleheader last week en route to a crazy 38-28 win over the Cerveceros, who took the nightcap 18-15. In other games, Penticon nipped Dimona 8-7, who in turn edged Ziontours 3-2, Shimshon Hi Tech downed the Dawgs 17-9, Penticon rolled over the Cerveceros 17-6 and the Galil Twisters dropped a pair, 13-12 to the Tigers and 9-3 to Dimona. Re/Max-Ra'anana 38 Cerveceros 28 (8) (Game 1) On Thursday, Re/Max and the Cerveceros combined to break several ISA scoring records, including most runs in a game and most runs in an extra inning in a three-hour epic. A seesaw battle saw the Cerveceros tie the game at 16 with a four-spot in the bottom of the seventh. Then the flood-gates opened as Ra'anana scored an astounding 22 runs in the eighth. Not to be outdone, the Cerveceros roared back, scoring 12 before finally succumbing. Alan Guy had five hits, including three doubles and a homer and pitcher David Leichman also added five hits. Ozias Kaim and Alberto Tacher were each an amazing 6-7 and Saul Kaim and Yohandry Gil-Levy both had four hits for the Cerveceros. An exhausted Re/Max coach Howie Litz said "Not only was the first game one of the most bizarre, high scoring games in the history of Israeli softball, but what makes it even more incredible is the fact that Re/Max was held scoreless for four out of the seven regulation innings & still managed to score 16 runs before exploding for 22 in the eighth - tiebreaker - inning." Cerveceros 18, Re/Max-Ra'anana 15 (Game 2) In the nightcap, which started at 22:15, the Cerveceros exploded for a 12-run first off pitcher Alain Serels, and cruised to victory. Yohandry Gil-Levy and Ozias Kaim had perfect 4-4 games to lead the way and Carlos Hidalgo-Grass allowed only three runs for the victory. Alon Leichman smacked three hits in a losing cause for Re/Max. Penticon 8, Dimona 7 On Sunday, Netanel Levenson's infield hit scored Dan Marcus in the bottom of the seventh to cap a three-run inning as Penticon came back from a 5-1 deficit. Akaziyah Ben Israel and Avraham Ben Israel each had a pair of RBI hits to give Dimona the big lead, but Penticon battled back against pitcher Yarone Ben Israel with an RBI triple from Sholom Menorah and three hits by Brian Aron. Tigers 13, Galil Twisters 12 On Monday, the Tigers came back from a 5-2 deficit with a seven-run third off pitcher Hezi Ganz. The Twisters tied it at nine and again at 11 before Shlomi Mor-Hayim rapped an RBI single off of relief pitcher Yoni Weiss, his fourth hit of the game, and another run scored on an error. Tigers pitcher Goose Gillett held the Northerners to one run in the bottom of the fifth to earn the crucial victory. Mario Rojas hit a big 2-run triple for the Tigers and Rob Barasch was 3-3 in a losing cause. Shimshon Hi Tech 17, Dawgs 9 On Monday, a scoreless pitcher's duel through two frames between Shimshon Hi Tech's Gadi Bossin and the Dawgs Daniel Baram turned into a slugfest. Down 5-3, Shimshon scored 11 in the fourth to take the lead for good, led by Dovid Axelrod and Chananya Weissman (three hits each). Brent White mashed a three-run homer to deep left for the Dawgs. Dimona 3, Ziontours 2 On Tuesday, Dimona's Yarone Ben Israel and Ziontours' Aaron Levarko locked horns in a classic pitching duel. Dimona held a 3-0 lead until the last inning when Levarko smashed a three-run triple and then raced home when the cut-off man bobbled the ball. His throw home hit a runner who had scored and was coaching Levarko, and it was ruled interference by the umpires, who sent Levarko back to third base where he was stranded. Dimona 9, Galil Twisters 3 On Friday, Yarone Ben Israel was dominant, striking out 12 and Amekai Ben Israel was 3-3 with two RBI's. Jake Miller was the lone bright spot for the Twisters, going 3-3.
