Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has said an initial vote on the bill would take place no later than Wednesday, but faces opposition from both sides of the aisle.
Schumer also said he will discuss US border security with President Joe Biden and Senate Democrats.
In a one-minute-long video posted to his Instagram account, Schumer pops up from the crowd to uproarious applause.
Democrats said the Republican bill would be dead on arrival in the Senate, even if it passed the House.
Each speaker expressed unstinting support for Israel’s war aim, to destroy Hamas. President Joe Biden, who is flying to Israel on Wednesday, has also said that Hamas must be eliminated.
A confirmation hearing for Jack Lew, the nominee to be the next ambassador to Israel, is scheduled on Wednesday.
Schumer and a four-member bipartisan delegation to Israel met with victims of the attack as well as with top Israeli officials.
