Those tariffs would increase to 25% on June 1 and would continue until a deal was reached for the US to purchase Greenland, Trump wrote.

Modest European deployments, meant to help Denmark prepare for military exercises, sent a strong message of support for Greenland's sovereignty.

The Danish FM clarified that any “ideas that would not respect [the] territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of self-determination of the Greenlandic people are unacceptable."

The delegation will be led by Democratic US Senator Chris Coons and will include Republican US Senator Thom Tillis and Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin.

"It is solely up to Denmark and Greenland to decide about Greenland's future. Territorial sovereignty and integrity must be respected," Klingbeil said.

An acquisition of Greenland may give the United States more control over the Arctic region and an ability to counter aggression in a strategic region, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said.

Denmark has historically accommodated the US presence because Copenhagen lacks the capability to defend Greenland and benefits from US security guarantees through NATO.

Barrot said the subject would be raised at his meeting with the foreign ministers of Germany and Poland later in the day.

Greenland, a former Danish colony, has the right to declare independence under a 2009 agreement but depends heavily on Danish subsidies.

Physical letters have declined dramatically in volume over the last twenty five years, the company said, from almost 1.5 billion in the year 2000 to only 110 million in 2024, over a 90% decrease. 

This comes amid a rise in antisemitism that began after October 7. Several people have been charged recently in Denmark and abroad with planning terrorist attacks against Jewish and Israeli interests
