"Our entire missile defense system could be destabilized if you don't control the Arctic," the vice president told Newsmax's Carl Higbie on Thursday.

Using the price at which Russia sold Alaska to the US as a reference and accounting for price adjustments, Putin said buying Greenland from Denmark could cost around $1 billion.

"We know that the Americans are stronger than us," Danish MP Rasumus Jarlov told CNN, "but it is our duty to defend our land and our people."

The current security and political arrangements are more than sufficient, rendering the US acquisition of Greenland unnecessary.

Trump has repeatedly insisted he will settle for nothing less than ownership of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

"As members of NATO, we are committed to strengthening Arctic security as a shared transatlantic interest," Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Britain stated.

Those tariffs would increase to 25% on June 1 and would continue until a deal was reached for the US to purchase Greenland, Trump wrote.

Modest European deployments, meant to help Denmark prepare for military exercises, sent a strong message of support for Greenland's sovereignty.

The Danish FM clarified that any “ideas that would not respect [the] territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of self-determination of the Greenlandic people are unacceptable."

The delegation will be led by Democratic US Senator Chris Coons and will include Republican US Senator Thom Tillis and Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin.
