First it was a movie (1992), then an award-winning Broadway play (2003), and now Mathew Barber's charming romantic comedy Enchanted April, directed by Ro'i Horowitz, has just opened at the Beersheba Theater. It tells the story of four Englishwomen in the aftermath of World War I who decide to leave grimy, rainy London behind for a month's holiday in a rented villa in warm and gorgeous Italy, just to get away from it all.
Barber based his first play on the book by Australian-born author Elizabeth von Arnim (1886-1941), who married a Prussian princeling and signed her novels Elizabeth because aristocratic hubby disapproved of his wife-as-writer. Her first book went through 21 editions and both Bernard Shaw and E.M. Forster admired her. She published Enchanted April in 1922.
