It could only happen in London, the bastion of narrative painting. Christie's evening sale of Postwar and Contemporary Art in London next Wednesday is full of real paintings, narrative and abstract.
The list is headed by durables Lucian Freud, Leon Kossof, Frank Auerbach, Ron Kitaj, Bridget Riley, Tony Bevan, Roy Lichtenstein and even Paula Rego and Damien Hirst. Conceptualism, this week pronounced finally dead by leading London lights, is barely represented - not even in the day sales, where Warhol, Albers, Poliakoff and Wesselman are a strong presence. The latter's nudes are a knockout.
Freud's standing portrait of Bruce Bernard ( 4.5m.- 5.5m.) is the top lot. The sale is a testament to the staying power of the new art of the 50s.
