The new Yiddish opera 'Itche Heist Ir' revolves around an incestuous relationship between a brother and a sister.
By GREER FAY CASHMANThe new Yiddish opera Itche Heist Ir (Your name is Itche) revolves around an incestuous relationship between a brother and a sister, Itche and Adela, who succeed in concealing their secret from the world. The siblings are in search of a suitable candidate to father a child for them. A young man by the name of Zygmunt presents himself, but he ends up attracted to Adela and makes it his mission to distance her from Itche. The two men wage a fierce battle for her affections.
Performances begin at the home base of Yiddish writers and journalists in Israel, Beit Leivik (Rehov Dov Hoz 30, Tel Aviv), this Saturday night and continue February 10.
The music for the opera was composed by Daniel Galai, a multi-talented musician and writer who also happens to be the director of Beit Leivik. Beit Leivik frequently serves as a venue for Yiddish cabaret, klezmer concerts, Yiddish poetry readings, Yiddish plays and musical comedies as well as seminars.
