A new arts award named after Andrea Bronfman, the late wife of Canadian Seagram heir Charles Bronfman, was awarded for the first time last week to Israeli decorative artist, Hadas Rosenberg Nir.
Rosenberg Nir, a senior lecturer in the ceramics departments of the University of Haifa, Bet Berl Art Teachers College and Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, won the NIS 50,000 prize for her amalgamated sculptural forms, wheel-thrown pottery and hand-produced shapes.
Charles Bronfman conceived the prize as a way to mark his wife's 60th birthday in May, 2005, eight months before she was struck by a car in Manhattan.
"The Andy," formally The Andrea M. Bronfman Prize for the Arts, rewards the work of an Israeli decorative artist working in ceramics, jewellery, textiles or glass, and allows the winner a chance to exhibit a collection of works at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv.
Andrea Bronfman supported various arts programs, such as the Association of Israel's Decorative Arts, which helped expose Israeli artists to North American dealers and galleries.
